GRADUATE PROFILE

Stephanie Jordan, MSc Marketing Practice Graduate

When did you graduate and what postgraduate course did you do?

I graduated with an MSc in Marketing Practice in 2021/2022 in the University of Galway. Before completing my master’s degree, I studied Commerce at the University of Galway for three years and specialised in marketing in my final year.

Why did you choose University of Galway for your postgraduate studies?

The University was an obvious choice for my postgraduate study. I had a very enjoyable three years studying Commerce at the J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics, which has a brilliant reputation for its top-class facilities and lecturers, so I was very excited to continue my studies at the school.

What did you think the main differences were between undergraduate and postgraduate study?

The MSc in Marketing Practice was also a clear choice for me, when I started researching for a postgraduate course during the final year of my undergraduate. The main attraction was the 37-week placement. As I did not complete a work placement in my undergraduate degree, I was really interested in gaining real-life work experience. The small class size was also a huge bonus as it allowed each student to receive continuous support and mentoring from the programme directors and lecturers. The class became very close, and the class reps arranged many memorable bonding trips away!

Would you recommend your postgraduate course to other students and why?

I would highly recommend the MSc Marketing Practice to any student who wants to enter marketing. There is a great balance between theory and practical application, as all assignments throughout the six taught modules had to be applied to our work placements. The course focused on learning by doing, and not only did you graduate at the end with a master’s degree, but also a wealth of knowledge learned by completing real-life marketing tasks throughout the placement.

Did your postgraduate course help with your current job?

After completing my placement and studies in the course, I instantly secured my new position in Portwest as a Digital Marketing Specialist. Portwest is a global manufacturer and innovator of work-wear, safety wear and PPE and is the fastest-growing work-wear company in the World. Having the 37-week work experience was a huge benefit to me applying for this job as I would not have had the skills and knowledge needed for the role without the placement. I look forward to continuing to learn and grow with the evolving world of Marketing in my new position and possibly returning to the University in the future to complete further study and research.
