Getting the most out of Postgraduate Open Day

If you’re thinking about going on to postgraduate study, NUI Galway’s Postgraduate Open Day is a must-attend-event in your student calendar. It’s your chance to explore course opportunities, meet staff and students, ask questions, and attend presentations. Here’s six quick tips to help you get the most from the day.

  1. Plan in advance

To get the most from your open day visit, pre-planning is a must. Look at our postgraduate courses online or in our prospectus (download or order it here). See which programmes appeal to you, so that you know which stands to visit on the day, and which lecturers you want to meet. New postgrad courses on offer this year may be of particular interest, you can check those out here.

  1. Pre-register

To beat the queues at registration desks on the day, you can pre-register for the Open Day online now. By pre-registering you’ll also be sent useful information about the event in advance, and reminders about it too.

  1. Check out the programme

The programme for the Postgraduate Open Day will be online here. It’s a really good idea to view this in advance so you can mark the programme stands you want to visit, see the schedule of talks on offer, and note also the student support exhibitors you may want to chat to like Admissions, Fees, Graduate Studies, Career Development Centre, NUI Galway Launchpad and more).

  1. Prepare questions

Take a few minutes before the event to write down questions in advance, so you can make the best use of your time speaking to those on the stands. You may want to chat to current students, lecturers, or support staff, so remember to prep some questions for each.

  1. Attend the talks

On the day there will be four engaging presentations covering such topics as graduate employabilility, applications, personal statements, funding, and research. These will take place in The View (first floor, Bailey Allen Hall), and will be approximately 30 minutes in duration. They are a really worthwhile use of your time and there’ll be ample opportunity for Q&A as well. Attend one or all four!

  1. Visit support stands

Support stands will be exhibiting on the day: including Fees, Admissions, and Graduate Studies. Most of our postgraduate courses require a personal statement (“Why do you want to do this course”, which is approx. 600 words). This can seem like an onerous task, and the team in the Career Development Centre can help you with this. A good tip would be to draft your personal statement in advance and bring it to their stand for them to review. The Admissions team will be on hand to answer your specific application queries, and the Fees Office can advise you on course fees, payment-instalment plans, grants and more. This expertise is on-hand on the day so a great idea to make the most of it.

The Postgraduate Open Day will take place on Tuesday 5 November, from 12–3pm, in the Bailey Allen Hall, NUI Galway. We look forward to seeing you there.
